In February 2021 the U.S. Forest Service awarded a contract to design and build a 16,000-gallon mobile retardant mixing tank for the air tanker base at Medford, Oregon. The agency wanted the ability to relocate the tank during the off-season and needed one large enough to refill very large air-tankers (VLAT). Fortress delivered the tank/trailer in Medford on May 24.

Fortress will be conducting a real-world test of their product this year in Montana. When fully approved, it will be the first newly formulated long-term retardant product to make it onto the Forest Service’s Qualified Products List in over two decades. The retardant has successfully completed all US Forest Service laboratory tests for fire retardancy, toxicity, corrosion, and viscosity.
